Will be producing our own version of the Trabant soon, East Germany’s version of the Yugo, only worse.
The public economy is now 25% of GDP. Private ecomony makes money, public spends it.
Raising taxes to cut the deficit is a bailout for the spenders(DC).
Why are we looking to copy europe, instead of Asia, our true compeitors? Most of europe will be doomed by their public sector and arcane work rules. There’ll be little money left for investment save for Germany. Northern Europe, has a great social net and understands the common good but they’re a homogenous society unlike america.
“And the problem with capitalism is that it only cares about profit, rather than any moral notion of a common good,”
Capitalism is our economic system, but our government is more than just an economic system. However our nations “moral sense” is in complete disarray. One of the main problems being that people take no personal responsibility, but expect big Mommy and Daddy govt to do everything for them: Provide jobs, healthcare, housing and everything else.
The point of living in a free society is being free to make your own way, and living with the results: good or bad.
i cant speak for others because everyone has a different lifestyle, but ive been crunching the numbers and the following is how my quality of life (this takes into account every aspect of financials) has decreased in the last three years.
Assumes that everyone has the same idea of the ‘common good’, or that yours is superior to others’.
Well, or it might assume that we’re in a democracy, but if you’re nominating me as dictator-for-life, I’m open to it.
And if you want to do away with government, you’re welcome to turn off the tap, burn your trash, and shut down gramma’s dialysis and move to antarctica, because I believe that’s the only un-governmented place left.
DIBS, you factored in Value Added Taxes right? Which most of these corporations outside the US are paying as well.
And with these taxes I’m amazed that US corporations find the money to pay their executives tens, and on occasion, hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and yet they seem to be able to.
And again, not entirely clear on cutting taxes for multimillionaire corporate executives creates jobs and generates innovation. I must have missed that part of your treatise.
I’ll leave your middle class laziness comment alone. Nothing I could add to make it more sad.

2008- 2009 : -8%
2009- 2010 : -17%

bfarwell, aside from China, which is essentially capitalistic in culture, the remaining socalist/Communist countries are:
Russia and the “stans”, North Korea, Burma, Laos, Vietnam and maybe Bulgaria and a few other eastern European countries.
