You guyz are wayyyy too serious. I’m just here for the cocktails and pigs in a blanket. . . . oooh, and those chicken satays that waitress is carrying look great . . . ‘scuse me . . .
Why bothers me is that when my firm doesn’t do well my salary declines, but if you work for the govt, which is failing spectaculary, you still get raises and cola. And yet they still want more of my money.
Other than the state being involved in healthcare to a greater extent there’s very little difference, cobble. UK personal income taxes are lower than NYS. Not sure about other countries.
I think bfarwell was referring to a Swedish type system, although even that has had to change a lot in the past fifteen years as they could not afford it. I would call that social democracy or a mixed economy.
The UK, France, Germany and Italy all have conservative / center-right governments (as does Canada!). I doubt they think of themselves as socialist!
Nomi, you and bfarwell need some reading comprehension lessons.
I wasn’t equating lazy welfare people with the middle class whose incomes have declined. i didn’t even originally bring up the middle classes, someone else did.
Re: socialism, it amazes me to hear arguments for – as though the last 50-60 years did not happen when we have seen socialism FAIL categorically to deliver the goods across the planet. The small conclaves of socialism which survive on this planet are places which are nightmarish failures — Cuba and the loser class of Latin American countries, with Chavez leading the pack. The Chinese have morphed their class of communism to one which highly incents hard work and private initiative — this from the exciting experiments with private agricultural production and transformation of farming collectives in the early 80s.

By which I meant difference from the US. Sorry, wasn’t clear.

He’s pretty close, pete. But he’ll be gone in 2012. the tide will turn in November for Congress.
You should hope for gridlock and the market will do better for your IRA because god knows your spouse doesn’t want to work forever.
“Let them eat cake.”
LMAO Marie! This way to the guillotine > > >
“There are “hard working” people whose incomes have declined because of the economy or other unavoidable life circumstances.” Nomi
Most everyone has, including myself, UNLESS you belong to a public employees union. (Dave)
Huh? So why didn’t you say that instead of just saying people are a bunch of lazy slobs?
