I know times are tough but I was wondering where did all our wonderful brownstone renovators go that had been posting on Brownstoner? I was particularly enjoying the couple in Bed Stuy, haven’t seen a posting since July.
“The Dutch name for the area, Cobleshill, referred to a hill centered around the area where Court Street meets Atlantic Avenue. The hill was leveled during the Revolutionary War by the British, who wanted to keep George Washington, who had occupied the hill with his troops in the summer of 1776 during the Battle of Long Island, from having a strategic vantage point over their headquarters in Brooklyn Heights.”
“Sometimes a broker will come up with a name for a neighborhood that will stick. In the 1950s — when Cobble Hill was basically considered a part of Brooklyn Heights — a local broker rediscovered the old Dutch name for the area between Atlantic Avenue and Degraw Street on the western end of Court Street (Cobleshill) and called it Cobble Hill.
Brooklynites have been referring the area that way ever since.”
The Battle of Brooklyn is a sad story.

Cobble stones, I guess. There are plenty of them still around. And it is on the side of a hill – Court and Atlantic being the top of the hill.

Cobleshill sounds like a Brownstoner login name.
