Stickball was definitely one of the key games when I was a kid, though I wasn’t very good at it. The top game in my neighborhood, however, was punchball, in which one used a clenched fist as the bat. In most versions of both stickball and punchball, there was only first base, third base and home plate. I don’t know why this was so, it just was.
It is amazing to think how many games we used to play with a spaldeen and the city streets: stick ball, punch ball, stoop ball, slap ball and hand ball, just to name a few.
Denton, if possible, you should try to catch that special. I thought it was great, but for someone like you who actually played, I’m sure you’ll love it.
I was just telling Man of the House I want our kid to play on the streets like we did growing up in NYC. None of this setting up playdates and controlled playtime. Make some friends on the block and surrounding area, go ring their bell and play ball on the sidewalk.
DCB, I bet you also didn’t have bike lanes 🙂
Biff and all;

“I want our kid to play on the streets”
Like mother, like son
My kids have helmets, uniforms, cleats, padding, coaches for gods sake.
I didnt have any of that and somehow I survived with only minimal damage!!!
My brothers played, but it wasn’t a COED kind of thing. We played a lot of rough games together (kickball, warball) but the boys played stickball.

Stick ball was played in the street. At least on 114th St.

“I gotta get it wherever I can!”
Why are you stealing my motto?
