lol, if you go through Love in the Time of Cholera,
the protoganist goes through a list of his lovers. A long list of lovers.
so the condoms are apropos. 😉

the works are hard to get through in Spanish,
but rewarding because no matter how good the translator,
(Rabassa is awesome)something is lost.
For instance a proper name like Fernando changed to
Fernandito gives it a whole new meaning and emotion.
I admit though, I’m lazy and read most latin authors in English.
Moby Dick is also rather funny in many places. I’m planning on reading Lolita this summer, supposedly a very witty book.

Well, he did write beautifully about all that.
Speaking of Marquez, someone gave me El General en su Laberinto a few years ago. I just started it and then got caught up in a bunch of stuff and stopped. This thread is a great reminder for me to go dig that out again and read it.

Legion, as I’m sure you know cien anos is written in pretty archaic Spanish – lots of words and phrases that aren’t around any more. As a non-native speaker I need to keep a dictionary by my side when I read it.
Used to enjoy Isabel Allende too. La casa de los espiritus of course…. eva luna too.
