I agree with the general point you are making BrooklynCouch, but I don’t think the example of this spill is a good one:
1) We already do drill closer to shore. It’s just that, as Denton said, those areas are much more depleted.
2) If drilling were allowed in those areas currently off limits, deepwater drilling would very likely still happen as well. It’s not an either / or.
3) The water depth per se does not make a difference to the chance of an accident happening in the first place. Blowouts happen onshore as well sometimes.
Hey, it wasn’t a democratic Interior Department that eliminated all the safety back-up requirements for drilling. Had this rig been constructed with the safety precautions required before the regs were gutted by Bush (and which are required in, say, Europe, for example), damage would have been far less and the leak would have been stopped weeks ago.
Chris Christie? Never heard of him. I guess I need to look him up.

Sure Pete, isn’t that what we do here all day?
” complaining about your heating bills this winter. ” I don’t complain about the heating bills. Just the repair bills.

“Drilling ‘far out’ or not doesn’t make any difference to the likelihood of an accident like this. ” – but loose oversight and less regulation does.
BrooklynCouch;
Welcome aboard! Nice intro!!
Our ranks are growing!!
Denton;
I agree with you. I want someone who has the balls to cut spending. As Etson said, no conservative is going to defend GWB on that point.
From what I see so far, Chris Christie is the man to watch in this regard. He’s moved to the top of my list of potential presidential candaidates.
it boggles my mind that some people actually pay for heat.

Your rent will be going up next year, rob.
