It’s not just the stores, #11. It’s the developer greed which has transformed Williamsburg from a funky, edgy creative enclave to a super ugly, yuppie den filled with some of the most uninspired architecture anywhere in the city. Everywhere you look there are abandoned projects, unoccupied buildings, graffiti on every surface and a total lack of consideration for green space. The waterfront area has just been absolutely raped for profit and it shows.
I used to really love the neighborhood and now I find what’s going on in Brownstone Brooklyn to be much more in line with growth which is sustainable, better thought out and more organic. Plus it’s just downright beautiful and life centers around outdoor activities in Prospect Park, which is really nice respite from the horror that is McCarren “Park.”
Feel free to love Williamsburg…I’m just over it now, as most of my friends are as well. I barely know anyone here anymore. It’s all late 30 and 40 somethings with kids trying to still fit into a “scene”, a few leftover hipsters who can still afford $2500 for a 1 bedroom, and a rising gang population on the South side. Not really the basis for a very stable neighborhood.
Even my favorite place, Brooklyn Star, burned by fire last month might not even be reopening. Houndtooth my favorite store closed and I heard Paul Smith is closing too. Things are not well in Williamsburg.
Jester, that is a good song. I have it on an Aaron Neville album from about 10 years ago. I didn’t realize Randy Newman wrote it, but after hearing it again – of course!
I find him to be a very formulaic composer with about 3 tunes that he rearranges ad infinitum. I guess the fact that he is very successful is a credit to his ability to do just that.
“Twelve of them had a really good Indian meal & the 13th took me out for French.”
LOL!! I’ve cooked with a Venezualan friend and her Indian mother-in-law…cooking for days only begins to tell the story. It’s a two day project for me, for sure.

Arkady, I’d tell you to come over, but not sure my dinner will taste very Indian.
Does anyone know if Lil Wayne is in Rikers yet?
Haha!! what a douchebag
Yeah MM, my thoughts exactly. Love that AN album!
Now I’m dying for Indian. Has anyone tried Joy on Flatbush Av.?

Ark, most Indian dishes now the spice mixes can be bought in boxes.
so if you want to make Chicken Tikka Masala, you can buy a box of the mix. Easy.
Admittingly, one of the dishes I’m making tonight I did buy the mix.
The other two I’m attempting, I’ll spice up cause they’re easy.
