  1. “Texpert, what is your asset allocation?”
    HUH???

“How are you split between bonds/stock/money market funds?”
    WHAT????

I’m not sure how the funds are. Aaaarggghh, I’m so confused.

LFW, I’m so lost. I think I have to start from the beginning and educate myself with all this verbiage first.

Let’s drip it, it’s just making me more depressed. Obviously, it’s going to take a lot on my part to understand all this. If I’m not around in the next couple of weeks, you can find me on the finance forums. I’ll be the *rob* of those blogs.

  2. Legion, you have to have a rationale for why you think it’s going to perform well. if that rationale is well thought out (like the health care bill) then you buy it.

But it is up 76% over the past 12 months!!!!

  3. ET,
    1) Make sure you are well diversified (mix of stocks and bonds, mix of US and International stocks). Also it makes sense to have a municipal bond fund, as they offer tax free income with a higher yield than US Treasuries.
At your age, as DIBS says, you probably need more stocks than bonds.
    2) Although they are by no means perfect, there is a service called Morningstar, which rates mutual funds relative to their peers. It will probably keep you away from the worst. Most funds that have a good Morningstar rating will boast about it in their literature.
There is another similar service called Lipper as well.
    3) For a more cynical take, you can look at the archives of http://www.fundalarm.com (although that site sometimes compares funds to the wrong benchmark).

  4. Some time in the next month we should reach the 400,000 comment mark. Who will make the magic comment?
