Etson, sandhogs are the workers who work underground to dig and construct the subways, and other underground tunnels.

etson, sandhogs are the guys that dig the subway tunnels, water tunnels, etc., under the city. Used to be an extremely dangerous job, still ain’t a picnic. If you’re more interested, there’s an excellent novel by Colum McCann, ‘This Side of Brightness’.
