  1. Denton, do you like nonfiction/autobiography? I recommend “Destined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany” by Hans J. Massaquoi. It is a fascinating read about a young boy whose father is African and mother is German. He doesn’t fully realize he’s not Aryan and doesn’t get why he can’t join the Hitler Youth. Very good book.

  2. That site is now in my bookmarks…I spent the better part of last night going through the pages and howling with laughter. The cats looked at me as if I were nutso. Pia eventually ran and hid under the bed.

  3. So, the national book award finalists have been announced. Glad to see I’ve read and own three of five.

I’m especially glad to see Colum McCann’s, Let the Great World Spin, is on the list. I hope it wins. It’s a book I’ve been meaning to recommend here, as it is a love story (imo, many others will take the opposite pov) to NYC in the 1970s. Loosely based around Phillip Petit’s walk btw the Trade Center towers.

benson, you would especially like, I think, an earlier work of his that I also love, This Side of Brightness. About sandhogs in the early 20th century who dug the tunnels under the East River, and their ethnic rivalries.
