rob – you are absolutely not required to contribute to your 401k plan. if you withdraw the money from your 401k, they will tax it heavily BUT you should absolutely not have to contribute to it if you don’t want to. Speak to your payroll department (or if you don’t have payroll people, speak to someone in HR who handles benefits). Or if your 401k is managed by a large company, like Fidelity or whatnot, you can probably opt out online or by calling the company managing your 401k.
everytime i ask to opt out of the 401K, my employer ignores my request. :-/ it’s the biggest waste of money, for me anyway. and i just wanna take out what i already put in it. ive been doing it for years and seriously i think i only have like a few hundred dollars in it anyway. lol
