The Westboro people are truly crazy. I think I read somewhere that a lot of them are members of the same family. They also pick such odd targets, with little connection to their agenda. Their main issue is that they are rabidly anti-gay and yet they choose to picket schools and military funerals.
That said, they are an isolated bunch of nutjobs and not representative of the mainstream of even fundamentalist Christianity. They get way more press than their size or influence justifies. So they are not worth wasting a Saturday morning over.
