You know, I hate to say “I told you so”, but I knew where that Billyburg triangle story was going to go the minute I saw it. Here is what I posted when I first saw it this morning:
“Such are the fruits of NYC’s political system that still thrives on a toxic combination of overweaning government and a racial/ethnic spoils system”
With the emergence of “post-ethnic” NYC in the Bloomberg era, this is not as prevalent as in the past, but at one time, this was ALL NYC politics was about, and it still lingers in some quarters.
My grandmother and uncle lived in a housing project in Canarsie for 39 years. The project was divided between two ethnic groups that shall go nameless, and my folks belonged to neither. When my grandmother and uncle decided to move out, they merely informed the NYCHA. They were visited by a member of one group, who asked why they were not given a heads-up, so that “we could make sure that we got one of our own in here”.
