    Tybur, Google translate gives you Chinese that looks as bad to a Chinese speaker as all those funny English signs in Beijing do to an American.

    Roman transcription systems for Cantonese (there are four or five of them) got invented so that gwailos like me could learn the language.

    Chinese people in Hong Kong also romanize Cantonese, but they use a kind of phonetic “making things up” system. That’s where you’ll find spellings like “Gor” and “hor” (or sometimes “gaw” and “haw” for “Go and “ho”

    But in the official, academic transcriptions–Yale romanization, Lau romanization, jyutping–the two different “o” sounds (short and long) in Cantonese are written in English as “go” (short vowel) and “gou” (long vowel). Or, “do” and “dou”.
