  1. Morning everyone.

    Re: California

There is no doubt that the economy has taken its toll. But California has been governed and hamstrung by referendum for 30 years. Structurally, so much of the way California taxes and spends is governed by binding referenda that the state’s leaders have much less flexibility to respond to crises than other jurisdictions. NYC tax revenues are down quite a bit from projections, but NYC has been governed mroe nimbly than is possible in California, so we are not experiencing the kind of crisis that they are. There are many factors at work in California, but you can’t avoid the huge role of referenda in hamstringing the governor and legislature.

Meanwhile, on the MJ front, I’ve found the first record I ever bought with allowance money, Jackson 5 Greatest Hits. Still has the original sleeve with all the ads for posters, stickers and the like. Did you know that, back in 1971, for $2 and a clipped coupon from the sleeve, you could have been Tito’s personal soul mate? The songs still sound great (yes, I still have a turntable). I do feel sad for Michael and his family (especially the kids).

  2. Bridges, snappy has correct mindset for this mess we’re in. she has a job, place to live, friends to be with,… and realize if this econ tanks on us there’s nothing we can do to avoid it so why worry about stuff you can’t change. It’s not like there’s a genius out there than can explain to us how to avoid or profit from this impending doom. For example, if all a doctor is going to do is to tell a patient that he has terminal cancer but has no remedy of any sort what good is that doc in that situation

  3. Biff, you are a riot!!!

Seriously…did you all hear about the guy who got drunk on tequila and tried to circumsize himself with a pair of nail clippers???!!! I think it happened in Belgium. Even I crossed my legs and cringed upon hearing that. OUCH!
