Do you have a favorite Brooklyn library you think deserves recognition and cash to make it even better? If so, you can nominate the branch for an award that’s been dubbed “the Oscars of libraries.”

The NYC Neighborhood Library Awards honor libraries for “exceptional service” with minimal budgets.

Six winning libraries will receive $20,000 and four runners-up will get $10,000 each.

New Lots won in 2015 and used the award to fund technology enhancements, programming and outreach. The Sunset Park Library was another previous winner, and used their prize to make a team building workshop and to purchase art and music equipment for their children’s programs.

(Though, ironically, plans are in the works for the demolition of the library for an affordable housing complex which would include a new library on the ground floor.)

The winners will be chosen by a group of judges that include authors Francine Pose and Min Jin Lee, head of the National Book Foundation Lisa Lucas, and Chicago Public Library CEO Brian Bannon. The awards are funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Charles H. Revson Foundation.

The nominations for the NYC Neighborhood Library Awards are open now and run through March 13. To learn more or nominate your favorite book nook for this year, click here.
