NY Post: Blame the Garbage Bosses

Today in blizzard finger-pointing: “Selfish Sanitation Department bosses from the snow-slammed outer boroughs ordered their drivers to snarl the blizzard cleanup to protest budget cuts — a disastrous move that turned streets into a minefield for emergency-services vehicles, The Post has learned. Miles of roads stretching from as north as Whitestone, Queens, to the south shore of Staten Island still remained treacherously unplowed last night because of the shameless job action, several sources and a city lawmaker said, which was over a raft of demotions, attrition and budget cuts.” The subject line of the email from a reader yesterday morn that included this photo: “This is Fulton street?”
Sanitation Department’s Slow Snow Clean-Up Was a Budget Protest [NY Post]
“The law states that those who go into any ER MUST be seen.”
True. And then they will get billed for the ER visit.
Legion, I’ll send in the clowns. I have no coherent argument to make with you but if I did I certainly would want to cite current statistics not ones from a decade ago.

I’d love to side with the Union on this, but if there was a grapevine call for a slowdown to send a political message to the mayor. G*d help us.
This is so much worse than just ‘sending a message’. So much worse. Piles of garbage would be gross, but with a slowdown during a blizzard they endangered people’s lives. I think that’s unforgivable. People in public service such as police, fireman, EMT, etc don’t stage “slow downs” just to make a political point. “Oh sorry, we aren’t putting out fires this evening.” “Oh sorry, we aren’t policing today.” “Sorry, not responding to emergencies with ambulances today.” That’s what this amounts to for me. And I seriously find it horrendous, and very hard to align myself with the workers. And I’m a commie lib!
dh,
…and besides, we can always eat the rich. ;o)
getadamnbroker,
of course we should expand Police,Sanitation,Teachers, etc, etc.
but how?
taxation
We are already the highest taxed state in the country.
tax the higher earners more and they leave.
We also lead the nation in the number of people migrating out of state.
We just lost two congressional seats as a consequence.
small businesses create jobs, not the government.
treat the small businesses well and the tax revenue will be there to expand the public sector jobs.
right now, we are on an unsustainable course.
This Sanitation incident is only the tip of the iceberg that we will be battling next year.
WTF, getadamnbroker. Where is the money supposed to come from to fully fund their budget? HELLO?!?!? We’ve been in an economic downturn for at LEAST the past two years. EVERY department has seen slashed funding, including education. What makes DOS exempt from bearing part of the financial bruden facing this city?
Education is about the only thing I ever agree with Legion on. LOL In Europe, higher education at a reasonable cost is pretty much closed to all students but the brightest. Here, you can be poor and have average grades and still go to college. Now, deserving to be there and it being a good investment is another discussion.
don’t worry peeps – it’s all good. we got A/C and color televison
heights magnifico,
all the lol’s in the world will not translate into
a coherent argument.
if you have facts to counter what I’ve posted,
by all means, present them.
if not?
…send in the clowns.
The clean-up was terrible. However, if the sanitation workers did do what they are accused of, I do not blame them. Bloomberg should have thought about this when he said he was cutting jobs and their budget. Sanitation workers, along with the police and fire departments and teachers are imperative in the running of a city. Their budgets should not be cut. Think about what they do? Think about what it would be like if they didn’t do it. A trash strike would be awful. So, Bloomberg, perhaps you take a look at your own actions and not blame the sanitation workers or their union that protects them.
