NY Post: Blame the Garbage Bosses
Today in blizzard finger-pointing: “Selfish Sanitation Department bosses from the snow-slammed outer boroughs ordered their drivers to snarl the blizzard cleanup to protest budget cuts — a disastrous move that turned streets into a minefield for emergency-services vehicles, The Post has learned. Miles of roads stretching from as north as Whitestone, Queens, to the south shore of Staten Island still remained treacherously unplowed last night because of the shameless job action, several sources and a city lawmaker said, which was over a raft of demotions, attrition and budget cuts.” The subject line of the email from a reader yesterday morn that included this photo: “This is Fulton street?”
Sanitation Department’s Slow Snow Clean-Up Was a Budget Protest [NY Post]
I’m with Mopar- there’s that little item on the second page:
” The city broke from its usual routine and did not call in a full complement on Saturday for snow preparations in order to save on added overtime that would have had to be paid for them to work on Christmas Day.”
Knowing there was a major storm heading up the east coast right for us.
I think that NSS has repeated the fact, several times, that the Post was merely reporting on an accusation made by a member of the council, who claims to have evidence. Despite that, folks continue to want to make this a referendum on the NYP.
We just had an unprecedented breakdown in city services, and folks want to pooh-pooh a major accusation from a cited source because they have a political ax to grind with the paper that reported it.
Incredible.
“In order for that complex conspiracy to take place, every union supervisor would have to go along, as would every truck operator.”
This isn’t true. Only enough have to go along to make an impact. I great example of that is what the auto union did in GM/Chrysler/Ford plants years ago. While there were very few outright protests, all it took were a few angry workers impropery assembling cars and putting enough defective vehicles on the road to harm the company they worked for.
If it was a union slowdown, they would have announced it in advance.
I blame Bloomberg for cutting 400 workers and not declaring a state of emergency. He didn’t want to close theaters or stores — damn anyone who needs an ambulance.
next they’ll claim that the bus drivers were in on it too.
all that the teachers union twittered each other to abandon cars in middle of roads.
always blame the workers. management or mother nature has nothing to do with it. ever.
Since this is a Post “exclusive” I suspect that it’s a complete fabrication, intended to divert criticism from Bloomberg, but who knows? Even a broken watch is right twice a day. Let’s see if a reputable paper picks this up.
YES! I want further investigation to this whole situation. People are responsible for this whole mess – how many people and who exactly will come out soon enough. I kept hearing this was the first year that snow removal directions were coming out of City Hall instead of each boro Sanitation chief – so that’s a major issue right there..
Perfect Storm (lol): late action by top guys and gals; possible union slowdown; private contractors on vacay or not interested in the city work; worst time of year for this, Xmas weekend; stupid drivers who must have had to drive to get to work in hospitals or had issues and got stuck; what is it 6000 miles of streets? combined to create a disaster
Hmmm – Blurred grainy videos and redneck accounts of UFO’s vs. clear as day video and accounts of trucks driving down streets with plows raised and sitting on the side of the road. Yeah they both seem to be in the same categorey of outrageous accusations…
You are right, no need for alarm, this is a non-issue of which no further investigation is waranted.
