A Special Corner of Crown Heights

The Daily News painted a flattering picture of Crown Heights and its residents this morning, but only a specific area of Crown Heights: “[The] little section of Crown Heights just south and east of the Utica Ave. and Eastern Parkway 3 and 4 subway stop.” Here is where, The News claims, residents are quick to help one another out, and by doing so “this small section of Brooklyn bordering Flatbush and Brownsville is battling rising crime and living costs with genuine kindness that crosses ethnic boundaries.” The article goes on to describe the neighborhood programs trying to prevent local violence, the appeal of low rent and home prices, and the increase of ‘for sale’ signs on homes. If anything, the article is notable for its kicker, a comment made after the neighborhood t-shirt salesman speaks on the positive direction the neighborhood is going. The piece ends: “The T-shirt with Martin Luther King’s face on it may have just smiled.”

…that neighborhood is horrendous
I have a coworker who grew up in crown heights who calls that park “Dodge City”
Nice story, much better than what the Times usually sells. This one didn’t have gentrifying newcomers, trendy bars, or the usual Crown Heights riots mentioned nonstop. It was basically about the people who have lived there through good and bad, and are making their community better, through living their lives.
Crown Heights is bigger than where I live or where Franklin Park is, or where the Lubabavitch live, it’s a huge community with myriad experiences, opportunities, failures and successes, like any other large neighborhood. I’m glad the News chose to feature that side of the story.
Only a matter of time before realtors advance the “Crown Heights is the next Fort Greene” meme.
