According to the reader who sent in this photo, the owners of this new wine store at 187 Dekalb were standing on the sidewalk last Saturday and soliciting signatures to support their application for a liquor license. We can’t imagine there being much resistance to an attractive wine store opening in the nabe, though with a name like Thirsty Wine Merchants, we suppose things could get a little rowdy. Wonder how the folks at Olivino and Greene Grape, both on Fulton, feel about the new competition!
UPDATE: The Brooklyn Papers covered this wine-shop controversy back in April.
I agree with what all of you are saying…. it sucks that we live in a competitive materialistic world but in my opinion the green grape has every right to protect there business… that’s exactly why the law giving the right to refute new licenses exists in the first place. for example, I will probably never shop at the green grape again; not because of any moral reason… I love the green grape… but because the new wine store (the thirsty wine merchant) is right across the street. Yes this competitive behavior IS a shame. But I think that Fort Greene and surrounding areas can certainly support three great wine stores. I welcome the new wine store, but I would also love to see some other merchants open…
Bakery especially. Maybe I will open one!
more spammin’! “Tons of interesdting stuff!!!” Priceless! Why is this allowed?
why is this thread always bein’ spammed?
p.s. oh, that’s the owner amy bennett … the one i heard say the delivery guy @ g.g. is an idiot. seems to be, based on what i’ve read, that she’s the idiot.
I am shocked to read what Greene Grape has done … how dare them go to such drastic measures to block someone way on the other side of the neighborhood from setting up shop. I shop at G.G. because I live 3 blocks away but now that I read and know this, I think I’ll walk a little further to give other wine stores business. As far as customer service anyway, G.G. leaves a lot to be desired; they are uber wine snobs and whomever the woman is that works there (one of the owners?), she is a total jerk. Last week within earshot (of myself and 2 other customers) she told her co-worker that she couldn’t wait to get a new delivery guy, one that “actually can talk to the customers and not sound like a complete idiot.”
meant to write “who questions the freshness of L’epicerie produce”
I’m a bit late, but…wow. Shocked about Greene Grape, happy about the new folks getting their license, love Olivino, and I second Anonymous 7:23 who questions the freshness of L’epicerie…NOT every time, but often enough for it to be a concern
Wow, some of you people are really mean.
L’epicerie is way over priced with questionable freshness. I would never buy meat or produce there. How about a bookstore in the neighborhood?
