Yesterday Community Board 6 District Manager Craig Hammerman sent out a note reminding residents that the city has tightened restrictions on block parties, reducing “the total amount of time for block parties from what had been up to 12 hours (from 9am to 9pm) to a new maximum of any 9-hour period between 9am and 9pm.” In addition, the city is now requiring that all applications for block parties be submitted electronically; the new procedures and rules are explained in this PDF memo. Killjoy or good news?

Gem10 is a lovely woman, but I tend to agree with cmu’s point in that I’m not fond of the fact that so many events in NYC are judged based on the extent to which they disrupt automobile traffic.
I’m all for the time-cap, a block party is great but it is something of an intrusion on others in the neighborhood. I also kinda wish they would require the organizers of a block party to invite everyone on the block. Twice during my time in Cobble Hill (and i’ve lived there, in the same apartment, for 9 years), i’ve been asked by neighbors to sign a petition for a block party permit. Apparently the law requires everyone’s signature to get the permit? In any event, i sign the petition, and tell my neighbor that i’d love to be in on a block party and please tell me what i can bring…and then when the date is decided, my husband and i don’t get an invite. We find out it’s happening on the day it happens. Seriously, next time someone comes to my door asking for that signature, they’re gonna get an earful.
PS, cmu, gemini10 is a very nice, very pregnant woman, not a “him”. Jussayin.
Obviously not true of ALL block parties, but Brenda nailed it.
i care not what you think, im not your personal court jester, MM.

“the level of partiness at a block party is actually inversely proprotionate to the # of moonfaces living on the block. unless there’s 45 dollar ice cream cones, they won’t show up.”
someone didn’t go to the bushwick block party on moore st last sept!
Rob, you’re starting to believe your hype. Clever and witty – NOT.
When my stretch of Franklin Ave got “shooty” last year, the cops refused to issue us a block party permit – as they feared the local knuckleheads would start beefing.
Hopefully the 9hr time limit would help ease the cop’s fear and we can get our party back on.
Like MM, we also had the insanely huge speakers set up, and yeah they can get so loud that I pulled my kid from the street at times – no one needs to get stricken with tinnitus when they’re 3 years old.
“screw block parties. do you know they don’t allow dogs in the bouncey castles? :-/
