Muggings in Fort Greene
A tipster pointed out to us that the Carlton-Willoughby Block Association began passing out these flyers on Tuesday. The flyers warn that there have been three muggings in as many weeks in or around the Fort Greene area, and that residents should be more inconspicuous and careful when walking alone with iPods and mobile phones. Of the three muggings, fortunately no one has been seriously injured.
you people would rather yell at each other and sound smart than actually get something done.
i just contacted Letitia James and she said she will get an officer posted on that block. we also discussed getting brigher or more street lights installed, especially around the ex carlton mews co housing site. democracy in action!
People – this block is right around the Walt Whitman projects and at least when I lived there it was very poorly lit at night. I don’t care how many yuppies buy brownstones or condos; this is a block where you should watch your ass. Walking down the street listening to your ipod on a block like this is just stupid. I’m not saying blame the victim – muggers should get their asses beaten hard and should get sent to jail – but I can’t say I’m all that sympathetic to some random hipster who walks down this particular block at night listening to his ipod and gets it yanked.
“not blaming the victims but what kind of idiots walk around with earphones oblivious to other sounds or wrapped up in phone conversation and not noticing everything going on around”
Incredible.
While not flashing expensive electronics is good advice, it is quite sad how many people in Brooklyn think treating their daily commute as a trip through a war zone is a reasonable solution to the problem.
For the record, I have a black iPod and black earphones.
“Unplug those white earphones.”
What do they have against white ones???
Pete you are right why would anybody think they can listen to an Ipod walking down the street. Next thing you know theses kids will be dancing.
Used to live on that block. I certainly wouldn’t walk down the block listening to an I-pod or whatever, and I think I’m on the less likely to get mugged end of the spectrum.
not blaming the victims but what kind of idiots walk around with earphones oblivious to other sounds or wrapped up in phone conversation and not noticing everything going on around…. or would openly display on street easily hocked or desired items for anyone to see?
