They are dropping like flies on Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg. First, Catbird and now Cheeks and Black Betty. Brooklyn Based broke the news on the closing of Cheeks bakery. The sign in the window simply says “Will Not Re-Open after Memorial Weekend Holiday.” Just a few storefronts over is Black Betty. Free Williamsburg has all the details on the rent fight between the restaurant and their landlord. Via their Myspace, Black Betty will close their doors for good on Monday, June 15th (they have a countdown sign in the front window).

  1. They didn’t just sell cupcakes. They sold really good cakes and pastries too. I never minded the owner’s moods.

Catbird, I sort of never understood what that store was for in the first place. Was the clothing new or vintage? Why was it $200? Why did it all look like it came from ebay?

Black Betty I will really miss. I took Mr. Heather there on our first date.

  2. To me a place that sells cupcakes shutting down has nothing to do with the recession but the fact that a place that sells cupcakes should never have opened in the first place.

..to niche to make a lasting business…

I think some of the best, most successful businesses are the ones that open in more lean times. They generally have better business plans, projections, etc. Places that open during boom markets are generally bad ideas that only work because money is being thrown at everything…

  3. Brownstoner next move is to open a bar … “Brownstoner’s”. isn’t there already a brownstone ale? everything could be brown. everyone who hangs out would be extra cool. interior built out to resemble oldest brownstone and all the stuff inside would be vintage. happy hour during the Flea. the What gets his own inscribed mug hanging behind bar.

  4. cheeks was very good.

Rob, during the last few recessions there were lots of random places that popped up. It is just so weird, and I hate it so much. Can’t really explain why, but it just bugs me when random places just pop up during the past few recessions.

  5. cheeks was awesome, but the owner alienated people. she wouldn’t sell you enough cupcakes for instance if you wanted them. they were just kinda mean. bad location for a bakery. would have killed on a busier street. everything was excellent. really really good.
