We’ve been watching the shuttered storefront of Monteleone’s Bakery (355 Court Street in Carroll Gardens) with fingers crossed for several months now. Locals commented on our previous posts about the place with some juicy neighborhood gossip — one person heard that shortly after they started renovations, the contractor went to jail for robbing a bank, and another claimed that the guy who fronted the money for the remodeling costs ended up in jail. In any case, we snapped this photo yesterday, and it looks like renovations are finally underway. (There’s also a little pro-Mets propaganda written on the new storefront window.) One Chowhound commenter got the scoop: “A guy standing outside (identity unknown) told me that they are remodeling and that Monteleone’s will re-open for business in approximately a month.” Yay!

  1. Oh gosh. I guess that the Health Department inspectors are paragons of virtue, with standards high above say, the D.O.B. or perhaps the D.O.E..

I wonder what happens when you don’t play along with a Health Department inspector?

  2. And for those who do not know, Monteleone’s got a rating of 60 from the health department earlier this year and was closed for a few days then until they could take care of the violations. If you look MonteLeone up on the health department website, it has the worst rating of any food establishment in Carroll Gardens.
    ( a score of 60. 18 in about average).
