It’s not about shower curtains. It’s about looking appropriate at work and socializing appropriately with the appropriate people. Undoubtedly all these things can be accomplished in a reasonable, unflashy manner. Don’t get me wrong — I don’t have the slightest interest in charity balls myself.
I’m still trying to convince people there is no such thing as trickledown.A mental Ponzi scheme if I ever heard one.
And these people (not all men — there are some women in there too) who cannot help but go into debt on $2-3 MM/year are the ones who have screwed things up for the entire world for the next decade! Tis is the Reagan legacy — too many bought into the hype.
well, as my ex used to say- you only have to stay _____ (white, black, you fill it in), pay taxes and die.
I’ve never been a great proponent of fitting in, although I don’t know if that’s because I’ve never been successful at it or if I actually believe it :-)- but in any event, I guess it really depends on how much you care. Somehow I think the social mores anf any group could be called into question if they think a $6000 shower curtain expresses anything about themselves other than they’re rich and paid way too much.
Though his point that you have to fit in to whatever social group you’re in is true. But perhaps you could be a more conservative Warren Buffet-type rich person rather than a social climbing nouveau rich person and still remain employed.
The article was semi-facetious. The author specializes in shocking stories about the extremes of New York culture. He wrote about pampered pooches on Hampton Jitneys and women who order hamburgers and steak to impress their dates.
Can we find some used maces and those nifty spiked balls you swing on chains?
It’s a well-deserved backlash. People are sick and tired of the look down your delicately upturned- via your plastic surgeon-nose at the stupid masses. We’ve had far too many years of that garbage, we all played into it and now look where we are. The stupid masses realized it first- now lets see how long it takes the John Thains and Candace Bushnells of the world to get it. Makes one wonder where the source of true stupidity lies.
I’m looking on Ebay for slightly used pikes as we speak.
