On Sunday the new occupant of the landmark former Gage & Tollner space on the Fulton Mall was revealed: It’s a discount jewelry store called Ladies & Gents. A salesperson said yesterday that despite its name, the store only sells wares aimed at women. (For example, it has a lot of $2.99 earrings on offer.) The storefront had been empty since last summer, when Arby’s shuttered after a short run. The Brooklyn Paper has more details on the new store, noting that Ladies & Gents is a tri-state chain and that the business had to retain elements of the landmarked interior like the bar. The color scheme, meanwhile, is very pink; click through a photo of it…

  1. Its as if the shops on the strip are exploitative. There isn’t a bakery or bookstore or wine shop or coffee shop. Its all very expensive sneakers and sports clothing, jewelry and pawn shops, cosmetics, phone stores, more phone stores. It’s gross. Nothing like a healthy commercial strip. Sorry.

  2. twenty years ago there were two good department stores and an excellent white tablecloth restaurant on Fulton street. Now there is only one department store that is going more and more downhill and in place of the restaurant is a shoe and earring store. I do not see the upswing on that strip. Everybody talks about it happening “any minute” but I don’t see it.

  3. well, it is what it is. Fulton Mall has its character and demographics, so be it.
It does seem unusual though that over the past twenty years as brownstone Brooklyn real estate prices have skyrocketed, the retail on Fulton Street seems to be getting more and more down market.
