Mediterranean Bistro, Not Sbux, for Monsignor's Spot

Back in February, there was speculation that the old Monsignor’s space at 905 Lorimer would be replaced by Starbucks, a notion that went down with North Brooklynites like a batch of burnt joe. Now from blogger Test of Will comes news to the contrary. “According to the fellow there in the black shirt the old Monsignor’s space will be a Mediterranean Bistro, opening in about a month,” writes Will Femia. “No Starbucks/Bank/Drug store. Phew!” Mom and Pop, 1. Corporate Devil, 0.
Yeah. There is so much foot traffic right there. Monsignor’s food looked horrible and the place was nasty – Moonshadow was dogged by terrible word of mouth (as well as 4 thai and 4 japanese restaurants within 1/4 mile.) There’s no where to eat decent Mediterranean in this area – and if they have sidewalk seating, it will do very well.
Moonshadow was competing with too many already established and excellent Thai resturants in the neighborhood (ie: Thai cafe and Amarin). Monsignor’s never looked inviting, so if this restaurant in more open to the street, and has great food it will do well. The Greenpoint location is fantastic as it is just acroos from McCarren Park.
It’ll be interesting to see how anything fares there. It’s like that corner, and the next corner, are death. Moonshadow thai was always, always empty, as was Monsignor’s. The taco place in back of Monsignor’s had more business (and I miss it). And the dunkin on manhattan and bedford (in the old moonshadow space) is also always empty, and rightly so, because imho it is the worst of said establishments in the ny tri-state area (no, really).
back to the above, it’s a very big space and whatever moves in there will have to do very well.
