“The pastrami, corned beef and Shelly Fireman’s 15 bite hot dog will all be Halal when the Brooklyn Diner opens in a Dubai hotel enclave on February 15 with its ‘finer diner’ menu almost in tact, including kugel with the oven roasted Dodger pot roast. Officially connected to the Intercontinental Hotel permitting alcohol service in a mostly dry country the Dubai outpost will look like the faux diner on West 57th, with neon, a maitre d’ in a tux and sneakers and Brooklyn photographs by WeeGee. A supply of Fox’s U-Bet chocolate syrup has been ordered for authentic egg creams. Alas, there will be no seltzer.” –Insatiable Critic via The Real Deal

  1. Ditto, BrooklynGreen. I was “treated” to a post-concert meal at Brooklyn Diner a few years ago. Didn’t find the food particularly good and they didn’t allow for substitutions. (i HATE polenta!) The only thing I liked about the meal was thatI didn’t actually have to pay for it.

Don’t really care too much what occurs in Dubai anyway. Those Arab nations are filled with astounding amounts of ignorance and hypocrisy. Doubt that will change in my lifetime or in a few ore lifetimes.

  2. How much of his restaurants does Shelly actually own?! I certainly hope it’s a majority share. It’s certainly a long way from his days working in then kitchen and then opening Fiorello’s.

What ever happened with the court cases in which the employees were suing for back wages?

We’ve been to the Brooklyn Diner on 57th Street. We didn’t much like it much as the Italian restaurant around the corner. The Red Eye (is it still there?) was too cold and open with the feeling most diners are tourists with a just some wayward people living in that neighborhood.

I have a feeling we will NOT be going to the Dubai diner any time soon!
