The former home of the Stinky cheese shop on Smith near the corner of Degraw isn’t going to be vacant for long: According to a Facebook page and placeholder website, at some point next month it’ll be occupied by a store called By Brooklyn. The Facebook page has this to say: “It’s all made here…in Brooklyn! When you walk in the store you’ll know where it’s from, the best borough of New York City, Brooklyn! We’re excited to share with you our discovery of the incredibly beautiful and interesting objects and delicious goodies that can be found in the County of Kings.” These lanterns are an example of one of the things the store will be selling. I for one applaud this venture and it’s owner and the idea. One of the keys to an economic recovery is to give business to local sourcing through a venture such as this. If you want to continue to buy your “mass media produced/made in china” consumables, go right ahead. You will be doing nothing to support the local economy or the neighborhood you live in.
Sounds fun, cute. I, for two, will shop there. It’s like the locavore movement – why buy bowls, notebooks, shirts, cookies, when I am paying for them to be trucked/carted/shipped all over the world – thereby contributing to global warming, etc., etc. Looking forward to the opening.
I’m going to vomit if I have to hear one more person talk about a store as being “curated.” Can we possibly get more cutsy and pretentious!?!?
that said everyone should wish a new business owner good luck, whether you like the concept or not.
ENOUGH! You moved to Brooklyn, told everyone back home in Pennslytucky you moved to Brooklyn, keep writing boring articles for the NY Times about Brooklyn. Blah, BLah, Blah.
After yesterday’s story on empty storefronts on Smith Street, I think we should be applauding this new venture. I, for one, will be shopping there!
I hate to be a naysayer, I really do. But, um…nay.
The “Brooklyn as Brand” thing has long exceeded its lifespan. Enough already. I live in Brooklyn and I’m beginning to resent its ubiquitousness.
How on earth will they curate from the absurd bounty of stuff made by makers/artists/crafters in Brooklyn? At this point, we could fill a warehouse and that’s not including artisanal cupcakes.
