Although Two Trees confirmed last week that the slow-to-materialize Trader Joe’s at Atlantic and Court was all fact, no fiction, we still had no idea why the store was taking so long to become a reality. Now we know: The grocer’s plans had to pass muster with that merry band of preservationists known as the Landmarks Preservation Commission. As it turns out, TJ’s original application to make minor tweaks to the old Independence Bank building was incomplete, but the store submitted additional documentation a few days ago and the LPC green-lighted the application, according to a Landmarks spokesperson. (The biggest alteration to the building involves the installation of an HVAC system on the roof.) Time to put the No-Joe rumors to rest forever? We hope so.

  1. Look at who is insulting the other commenter’s here – it’s “Fjorder aka 10:46 AM” and he registered. Who cares if you registered or not since you are still anonymous. It’s not like the registration process on a blog requires identification and people like you claiming “guests” are hiding while people like you are not hiding is ludicrous!

You’re not very smart are you? No, you’re not. Being a sensitive jerk and hiding behind your registered fake name is still the same as posting as a quest. The only thing registering tells anybody is that you have way too much time on your hands and you’re most likely unemployed or retired. People recognize a fool when they see it and it is you.

let me guess, your middle-aged and bald and very fat. No one cares that you’re a wimp and sensitive to everything and must complain about other peoples behavior when yours are just as selfish.

Why don’t you switch to watching “This Old House” instead if you can’t stand the “internet”.

  3. Brownstoner, like the site. read it several times a day. but, as many have pointed out, the comments via “guest(s)” are destroying Brownstoner by posting comments that, for the most part, have no place on the site. It does me and many others no good to read “douchebag” used as a noun, verb, adjective, etc…and that’s the bulk of the comments! Or class/race attacks. Snooze.

When the aforementioned is avoided, the comment page(s) frequently create a robust discussion among posters—I’d just suggest trashing the “sign-in as guest” option for those who’d like to post. It’ll improve the site.

  4. There is nothing wrong with questioning why the Landmarks Commission takes so long to process permits that should be in and out in a few days rather than a few months. It seems the more staff they put on, the slower the permit issuing. There is a management problem there. The young staffers are micro-managing projects and the veteran staffers are not managing at all.
