After sending the Arby’s franchisee with his sights set on the landmarked interior space at 372 Fulton Street back to the drawing board last month, the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday voted by a 7-1 margin to approve the modified plans. The commissioners appreciated all of the steps the owner took to address their prior concerns, including returning wood floor panels to a darker color and preserving the mirrored wall. The last sticking point was the mounting of a large menu board over one of the mirrored arches; the commission instructed the owner to continue to refine the design to minimize its detraction from the historic space. The owner is shooting for a late summer opening.

As if anything good will ever spring up from the waste that is the fulton mall anyway. We’ll never see a real restaurant there again, or an art gallery or market or anything appealing. This is better than rot. At least there will be curly fries.
Things have reached a pretty pass when one is actually grateful that a fast food franchise will move in to the vacant space that once housed one of the boro’s most elegant and charming restaurants.
Sigh.
My husband proposed to me in Gage and Tollners a hundred years ago. Nice to hear we can go get a nearly inedible sandwich there for old time’s sake, when our anniversary rolls around this summer.
Arby’s is NOT what I, or many others, might like for this site, but kudos to them if they’re willing to work within the narrow confines of a designated historic interior landmark.

Are they KIDDING me with that terrible vertical sign? Times Roman on white with red stripes? Looks like crap that someone quickly slapped it together in Photoshop. Couldn’t they have at least tried to spruce it up a bit, given this location?

Since no one else is stepping up to the plate, pardon the pun, I guess this is better than the place being closed forever, and running the risk of water damage, fire and vandalism. That said, I would have loved to have seen something more appropriate for the space. I guess we shall see what happens.
Arby’s, Restaurant of Death. They demolished historic Niederstein’s in Middle Village, and will now set about despoiling Gage and Tollner.
