Cooking definitely rocks and what could be better than watching your favorite rockers cook? When I found out that Les Savy Fav’s Tim Harrington was going to be making ceviche at the Brooklyn Kitchen, I had to wonder if there was going to be mud involved. For those of you who were at their McCarren Park Pool show last summer, you know what I am referring to—Tim’s antics onstage might involve rolling around in mud, swimming in kiddie pools, or singing to the private parts of audience members. Whatevs. Everything’s fair at live shows, but cooking? Cooking for strangers in public? That’s a whole other level of performance. For those who want to cook in style, Tim and his wife Anna have a sweet little line of kitchen stuff like potholders, aprons and oven mitts (among other necessities) called Deadly Squire.

Thanks to the last-minute demise of my camera battery, I was a little late and didn’t actually get a chance to taste the ceviche, but from the empty pans and bowls scattered about and the satisfied faces of the crowd, it must’ve been good. Tim even pre-made his own dough for the tortillas and the place smelled like a heavenly combo of butter and cilantro, two of my favorite things. Tim’s in-store demo was the first in a series of events to celebrate the release of Kara Zuaro’s new indie rock cookbook, I Like Food, Food Tastes Good, and although that recipe isn’t in the book, it does feature a perfect dessert recipe from Les Savy Fav bassist Syd Butler—his mom’s recipe for butterscotch pie. Time to break out the elastic waist pants now, please.
