newsrack-0209.jpgVia BHB, news of a campaign by Councilmember Yassky to address the disorderliness of newsboxes. Evidently, there are lots of rules about the location and condition that must be adhered to. If you notice an offending newsbox in the 33rd Council District, you can report it here and DOT will take punitive measures to the tune of up to $4,000.

  1. Newsboxes bug me: It seems like an abuse of common space. I think that those who have the boxes should make deals with private owners. Lots of communities don’t allow them, or have far more restrictive regulations than New York does…like not restricting quantity as long as they don’t violate other regulations. Indeed, at some locations, you’ll see 6-12 of those stupid ugly boxes.

  2. Biff, I noticed that too over the weekend. And a lot of graffitti on mailboxes and lightpoles. You need to join the BHA and tell them to re-focus on the Heights and stop fighting battles in DUMBO and elsewhere.

  3. The placement of these boxes are regulated, I believe, in terms of blocking curbs, but I’ve watched sanitation workers toss them around and shove them into spots where they block access to crossing. As far as the trash put in them, that’s clearly the fault of our fellow Brooklynites who are too lazy/stupid to put their trash in can and can’t be controlled by the owners of the paper boxes.

  4. rob, the problem is that sometimes there are so many newsboxes on certan corners that it becomes a challenge to find a gap to cross the street, especially when there is snow or ice. Additionally, it is just better to have tidy and uncluttered sidewalks. It just makes for a nicer urban day. I don’t think it is about people being overly-fussy or controlling. My opinion.
