560-State-0909.jpgNew York Magazine reports (and Curbed picks up) that the new single off Jay-Z’s current album references his former “Stash Box” at 560 State Street.” I used to cop in Harlem, all of my Dominicanos. Right there up on Broadway, pull me back to that McDonald’s. Took it to my stash box, 560 State Street. Catch me in the kitchen like a Simmons with them pastries.” The magazine goes on to say that 560 State would be an ideal location for a stash box, given its proximity to the intersection of Flatbush, Atlantic and Fourth Avenue. It sounds like Jay may be exaggerating the extent of his activities at his former address, however. One neighbor remembers him as a cordial and respectful neighbor. GMAP

  1. Amazing that so many care about the What. I don’t know what’s more pathetic – people who spend hours each day monitoring and commenting on a real estate website, or people like him who desperately want to be down with this crowd.

For the record: the What ain’t hood. And as a general rule, anyone employing the term “asshat” ain’t hood. But that’s not the only reason for my assessment.

And it’s simply astounding that, in this day & age, there are people who still think that rap is not music. And y’all are from Brooklyn? Good God. As a longtime hip hop fanatic, i say Jay-Z is an OK rapper. Certainly no “genius,” but good, talented, and smart. And not a thug, unless one considers all former drug dealers to be per se thugs.

  2. Jay-z helped put Brooklyn back on the map in a good way…it doesnt matter that he is a rapper.
Also, anyone that has ever met him will attest to the fact that he is quite a gentleman and not a thug like folks make him out to be.
Yes, he is a rapper, Yes he is from the projects but he did what he could to get out of there and look at him now.
Probably one of the brightest people out there.

  3. No, I’m pretty sure he was famous before we even knew about Beyonce. I play an instrument – pretty well, actually – and I still think Jay Z is a musical genius. Some people have music in them and some don’t. Seems to me Jay Z’s got it, but that’s just one man’s opinion, I suppose. He may use the modern tools of digital music to craft his song, but I’m not going to hold technology against him.

But mostly he’s a business genius.

  4. “I think to qualify as musical genius you have to be able to play an instrument. And I’m not sure that bragging about your days as a drug dealer counts as poetry, even if it does rhyme”

Wrong on all counts. So you’re essentially saying hip-hop isn’t a legitimate form of music because rappers don’t play their own instruments? Even if you don’t like the music – Jay-Z has made 100s of millions of dollars first and foremost through his music, so it seems enough people disagree with you. I don’t even like him that much but all this hate is dumb.

” Seems to me he’s more famous for being Beyonce’s other half, no?”

Absolutely not – more like the other way around.

  5. “Jay Z is a musical genius…”

I think to qualify as musical genius you have to be able to play an instrument. And I’m not sure that bragging about your days as a drug dealer counts as poetry, even if it does rhyme. Seems to me he’s more famous for being Beyonce’s other half, no?
