We’d originally relegated this story to the Daily Links post, but it’s too good not to have its own post…Apparently one of the owners of the popular coffee spot Gorilla Coffee at 97 Fifth Avenue in Park Slope rubbed the employees the wrong way so they all banded together and quit en masse, throwing the Park Slope ecosystem into disequilibrium. Evidently there are all sorts of signs posted out front with a running he-said-she-said account of the problem. From a reader: “My husband said there was line outside the door of people just freaking out and totally in crisis over the lack of coffee. I have a feeling he was one of them because I was on the other line when he called to tell me this, and he told my secretary that it was an emergency.” We also hear that Gorilla addicts have been depleting supplies at neighboring stores to ride out the current crisis. We’d be mighty appreciative if someone could send in some photos of the storefront and posted screeds…

  1. snark,

Your info may be wrong about Lonelyville. I don’t think it was a relationship drama that closed that place. A family matter, yes, but of a very different nature, from what I’ve heard. More deserving of compassion. I don’t want to say more because I’ve only heard second or third hand, and I want to respect their privacy.

Mrs. Slopey likes Gorrilla’s beans a lot, but whenever I ran the errand, I found the music decibel level obviated the caffeine. Whatever satisfaction the staff gained through this effort, they may have made themselves less hirable, even if they are in the right. Meanwhile, if you live South Slope/Greenwood/WT there’s always Southside.

I’ve talked to one of the owners a number of times about their pricing, but to no avail.

benson, they saw you that one day in your shorts so you have no credibility with them!!!!

  3. Gem,

I actually know some of the owners of Brooklyn Bread. I feel like their stuff is “ok”, but what I can’t get over is their PRICING. It is outrageous.

Example: classical Italian biscotti’s like the regina and anisette coookies. At Brooklyn Bread, it goes for $12/pound!!!!! Meanwhile, over at Caputo’s on Court St., you can get them for $4/pound and they are better quality.

I’ve talked to one of the owners a number of times about their pricing, but to no avail.
