We’d originally relegated this story to the Daily Links post, but it’s too good not to have its own post…Apparently one of the owners of the popular coffee spot Gorilla Coffee at 97 Fifth Avenue in Park Slope rubbed the employees the wrong way so they all banded together and quit en masse, throwing the Park Slope ecosystem into disequilibrium. Evidently there are all sorts of signs posted out front with a running he-said-she-said account of the problem. From a reader: “My husband said there was line outside the door of people just freaking out and totally in crisis over the lack of coffee. I have a feeling he was one of them because I was on the other line when he called to tell me this, and he told my secretary that it was an emergency.” We also hear that Gorilla addicts have been depleting supplies at neighboring stores to ride out the current crisis. We’d be mighty appreciative if someone could send in some photos of the storefront and posted screeds…

  1. Never been there but I have worked in a store with that exact same ownership. The girlfriend was completely abusive and insane. Once saw her smash a box down on the owner’s head in front of customers and staff. Because the owner didn’t agree with her on some unimportant issue. She was the scourge of the store for years. Wanted to use my desk once for some project she was working on, so she just took everything and threw it on the floor to make room. She treated the place like it was her own personal playground.

  2. Ringo- my secretary also calls herself a secretary. and my legal secretary calls herself a secretary. And these people in the story did know how to quit when they didn’t like their job- they did it all at once. Thats their right. And they were clever to excersaize what little power they had has unskilled workers, to an otherwise unaccountable owner. Is it wrong to hate you based on all your posts?

  3. > LONELYVILLE, ppsw, gone bc of lesbian relationship drama.

I didn’t know that. It’s too bad that place folded, as it was the only decent thing down that way. Good coffee and an excellent backyard space complete with friendly cat.

  4. I dunno
I think this could be the downfall of Gorilla
sure there are many employee insurrections to be found at various companies – but none quite so sensationalized by fringe media
I give the employees LOTS of credit for quitting en masse and not taking the BS anymore!
plus Gorilla coffee is GROSS and takes itself way to seriously
Go to Trois Pomme or Almondine or Cafe Regular for good coffee. I bet the other coffe shops are just LOVING this!

  5. “If any of you have actually been there you’d know the staff is nasty.”

BHillGuy, I was there once and seem to recall it wasn’t a positive experience. Not sure if it was the staff and/or the fact the clientele all appeared to be mirror images of each other despite the fact they undoubtedly perceived themselves as entirely unique. Regardless, I find contempt for the customer to be an extremely common phenomenon throughout the New York City retail universe.

  6. “given it’s still not so easy to find a job these days, wouldn’t it have been more prudent to approach the owners initially and threaten to quit en masse if things didn’t change immediately?”

I bet there’s some drama queen leading them.
