Come Valentine’s Day, Park Slope is getting a new hot dog shop — Willie’s is set to open at 351 5th Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets. The owners are long-time Park Slope residents Ellen Lutter (Adam Sander’s costume designer) and Tom Anderson (a lighting techie for the Soprano’s), and they named the place after their dearly departed black lab, who used to sit in front of the fridge and beg for hot dogs. They’ll be offering a choice of traditional, organic, and veggie dogs with homemade toppings and fresh-baked challah, rye, and multi-grain buns. They’re even making their own Twinkies and other retro desserts. We’re loving the design in this skinny space — one wall is covered by a mural of flying hot dogs, and the other is decorated with photos of locally rescued dogs. Take a look inside after the jump…

  1. So I don’t know why you think the Heidi is the best. I mean, I totally dig on it, but unless you’ve had the miraculous Phoney Baloney, you haven’t lived. It’s a CARROT DOG. It’s SOOO much better than a tofu dog, my mouth waters just thinking about it. I used to be a veggie, not now, but it is so good. I live a block away, so I got a lot. TASTY!

  2. WOW! It opened yesterday and I went in the evening and IT WAS AWESOME! The BEST hot dog was the “BLUE” (with bleu cheese!) because that was what I ordered. But my girlfriend had something called the “HEIDI” on a rye hot dog roll and I had a bite and man, that was also delicious (Swiss).

The desserts were limited but that was fine. I had a home made moon pie and I almost died. I wanted to take the entire tray home.

That is ONE place I will return to but I would have to order a gym membership.

  3. What’s up with you Park Sloper’s…When did you get so negative? (except for some of y’all) This is going to be great place, with great food, run by great people… Lighten up, have some fun, live a little! Eat some hot dogs!

  4. I can’t wait to get some grub there. I’ll probably stay to eat because of the fabulous mural, and the stories of those rescued dogs. I also think that the black lab with the collar is adorable.

  5. My personal opinion as a long time Park Sloper. On 5th Av, no bar? It wont be able to keep up with the other joints. Just selling hot dogs isn’t going to cut it anymore in the Slope. Places like this come and go like a flavor of the week.

Take Bonnie’s Gril or the new Brooklyn Burger Bar. Both are specialty Burger joints but they’ve got that late night bar appeal that, I think, is keeping them above the water.
