The Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards were handed out by the The New York Landmarks Conservancy in a ceremony at The Natural History Museum on Wednesday night. Only one residential project received a nod this year: Brooklyn Heights-based architect Tom van den Bout was honored for the restoration of 36 Grace Court. At one time covered in a modern metal facade, the house was immaculately restored to original brownstone form between November 2008 and July of 2009. (Kelly Construction was the contractor.) For a look at what the house looked like pre-renovation, check out MyHomeBrooklyn, where the story was originally reported.

I’ve seen several examples of Tom’s work, both exteriors and interiors, and he and Brenda do wonderful work. Indeed, Tom’s designing the restoration of my facade, which was basically wiped off during a prior “restoration,” likely in the ’70s. Maybe he’ll go two-for-two next year!

And I ask myself the same thing. If you want to live in a white box, go to new development.
bxgirl: 1959 was long ago and far away.
But what are people thinking today when they trash 130 year old plaster trim, woodwork, mantles and doors to put in white box decor?
Beautiful! What was the thinking on the pre-renovation facade? I just don’t get it. Like the people who do that fake fieldstone stucco crap. How can you think it looks better?
Brenda Nelson is part of the architectural team.
The contractor was Charlie Kelly and the brownstone mason (artist) was Saenra.
kudos to the owners and to Mr. van den Bout
A beauty.
