Green-Wood Cemetery is celebrating one of its more dramatic residents with a night of theater in the style of old-time New York.
Before Irish immigrant William Niblo (1789-1878) was interred in his grand mausoleum in Green-Wood, he ran a well-known 19th-century pleasure garden and theater in Manhattan. Now, as part of an annual event in Niblo’s honor, Green-Wood will hold an outdoor picnic and show at the legend’s final resting place, near one of the cemetery’s glacial ponds.
Entertainment, curated by vaudeville group the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, will include fire eaters, contortionists, harp music and historic games. Niblo’s mausoleum will be open for candlelit adventuring after the performances.
The event will take place from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. Tickets are $37, or $23 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and the Brooklyn Historical Society. Attendees should meet at the cemetery’s main gate at 25th Street and 5th Avenue.
To buy tickets, visit the cemetery’s website or call (718) 210-3080.
