The program is online this year but that gives you a chance for virtual tours of some of the places that have earned their advocates one of this year’s Grassroots Preservation Awards.

The annual event honors activists and organizations who work to preserve New York’s historic neighborhoods. This year, the Historic Districts Council has divided up the program into a series of tours and talks taking place this month.

Brooklyn is home to three of the winners this year with the East 25th Street Historic District Initiative, Green-Wood Cemetery and Judy Stanton of Brooklyn Heights all being honored.

On Wednesday, May 12 you can join Green-Wood’s Richard J. Moylan, President, Lisa W. Alpert, Vice President of Development and Programming and Gabrielle Gatto, Coordinator of Public Programs look at the cemetery and a discussion on how the organization has increased accessibility during the last year.

For the second half of the program you can follow Julia Charles of the East 25th Street Historic District Initiative for a virtual tour of the district and insight on how the community rallied to gain the historic district designation for their block.

Preservationist Judy Stanton will be chatting about her work as a steward of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District on Wednesday, May 26. A former executive director of the Brooklyn Heights Association and a member of the CB2 Land Use Committee, she has tales to share of preservation battles faced during her 30 plus years advocating for the neighborhood.

You can also get the opportunity to learn about preservation and neighborhoods outside of Brooklyn by hearing from the other award winners, including Untapped New York, the Walentyna & Aleksander Janta-Polczynski House Coalition, the Upper Riverside Residents Alliance and Councilmember Daniel Dromm.

For the full schedule of talks visit the event page online. All programs run from 5 to 6 p.m. and are $15 for general admission and $10 for Historic Districts Council members and seniors.
