After more than three decades of neglect some of the most beautiful public space along Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic coast is poised to get some much-needed attention. Yesterday the National Parks Conservation Association announced the winner of a design competition to create a master plan for the Gateway National Recreation Area, which includes 26,000 acres of land in Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Sandy Hook, New Jersey. The winners, a 23 year old from Japan and a 22 year old from Brooklyn, presented a vision of Floyd Bennet Field with jetties and piers and a strong environmental education component. Other parks like Fort Tilden, Jacob Riis and Breezy Point are also included in the plan. To see the six finalist proposals, click here.

  1. I’m glad to see the designer knows how to draw straight lines.
I think this is a horrible, almost militaristic design for a natural area.
Hey, Mr. hip designer, it’s called a “french curve” buy one and learn to use it. Give your straight-edge a break.
What is this? Mussolini goes to the beach?

  2. The area is beautiful — until they start doing projects like this. The jetties and piers shown above look hideous. Do we really have to put our architectural paws on everything? It can be such a destructive force. . .

  3. I don’t think Breezy Pt. should get an fed or state money… the people who live there are a bunch of racist jerks who gate thier community thus the PUBLIC beaches to keep out an unwanteds! Why give these types of communities $?
