We’ve known that the Fulton Mall was to be getting new lampposts as part of its $15 million make-over. We just didn’t know what they would look like. Until now. Forgotten NY just put up a post last night with the big reveal along with a largely positive review: “The posts may look a bit Dystopian, but I’ve been pushing for a signature lamppost of the 21st Century for awhile. For the longest time, NYC has tried to turn back the clock and has been installing newly cast versions of designs that first flowered in the 1890s. It’s a decade into the new millennium and it’s time for a new NYC lamppost. Maybe, this can be one of them.”
I saw them last week. My only thought was that they looked too large for the narrow street of Fulton Mall. That photo doesn’t show them in context.
These are a pretty nice modern design that would look good on blocks with sleek modern buildings. FWIW I’d prefer the repro light posts at Fulton Street {note how I avoid writing “Fulton Mall”]
Good to know, Pete. Most of the pictures make them look dull, but the one showing a row of them really draws out their modern curvaceousness.
These were installed a while ago. Someone was a little slow on the up-take.
Can anyone point me to a rendering on-line of showing what the streetscape improvements will look like? They tore up the sidewalk pavers and put down a common concrete sidewalk. Is that permanent? I remember hearing that they will be installing lots of benches, trees and the new style bus shelters.
streetlights are the least of Fulton mall’s problems.
could be they are the light sensors. But much more visible/prominent part of the design than the red things on top of the retro-lamps.
I am not a lamp post expert (nor have I ever played one on t.v.). Kevin Walsh is; if Forgotten New York approves, I’ll second.
Pete, I think the little green light at the top has something to do with light sensing. We have the bishops crook lights where I am and each has a red light at the top.
These might look alright in Dubai, on those sleek man-made islands one is supposed to see from outer space, but I’m not sure how they will look on Fulton Mall, with its messy collection of antiquated street furniture and storefronts.
