We’ve known that the Fulton Mall was to be getting new lampposts as part of its $15 million make-over. We just didn’t know what they would look like. Until now. Forgotten NY just put up a post last night with the big reveal along with a largely positive review: “The posts may look a bit Dystopian, but I’ve been pushing for a signature lamppost of the 21st Century for awhile. For the longest time, NYC has tried to turn back the clock and has been installing newly cast versions of designs that first flowered in the 1890s. It’s a decade into the new millennium and it’s time for a new NYC lamppost. Maybe, this can be one of them.”
I’m somewhat confused: Isn’t the photo posted of Flatbush Ave near fulton mall? These posts don’t look bad there (my dislike of modern design notwithstanding), but isn’t Fulton Mall the more intimate pedestrian space nearby? There, these lights will seem both to clash with the historic architecture, and be out of scale–no?
a ridiculous imposition of the elite’s idea of “good taste” on the unwashed masses. The elite in this case being the NYC Art Commission, now called something else but still as patronizing and out-of-touch as ever. This is an absurd Martian-meets-Dubai design. Why not place these on the Upper East Side or in Greenwich or on the streets where the elite live and shop?
No relation to me though; neither are the people who make Marvin windows 🙂
His name is Marvin.
I don’t know Tybur6. I don’t like them either, though. I think they look willfully ‘futuristic’ and sort of silly. They remind me of that little martian from the old Bugs Bunny and Friends cartoons.
Why do so many people in the poll not like these lights? They seem quite nice to me.
Steve, check out:
http://www.dbpartnership.org/dobusiness/improvement/fultonmall/streetscape. I agree with you; the sidewalks are a big disappointment. Sidewalks that wide need to have a pattern or something to break up the sea of gray.
Chris, I remember when Shaya “Now say good-bya” Boymelgreen wanted to put a modern-style light pole in front of The Beacon and DOT turned them down because it hadn’t approved a contemporary design yet. That was unfortunate, IMO, but I question the appropriateness of this fixture on Fulton Street. (Right on, Bob!) The green lights on top seem particularly affected to my sensibilities.
plenty of victorian in BK, how about some 21st century dudes
Those lamp posts will definitely scare the cannibals away.
