By the way, what’s the story on the dude who built this place?
i lived around the corner from this place 10 yrs ago and saw him around, he offered a tour anytime which i never took him up on. he also designed and made some cast concrete gargoyle heads on a building in the area. he told me that he knocked out every other floor to keep the building only 5 stories high. he built the space ship on top while i lived there, it’s got mirrors underneath it so it looks like it’s floating. very cool.
The builder’s name is Arthur Wood, and the building is called “Broken Angel.” There was an article in the Times about him and the building a few years ago, which is available here:

There was an article on this guy (name escapes me too) in NRG magazine last year.
This is also the place where Dave Chappelle had thrown a block party last year, I believe. It was in the NYTimes & NRG mag (http://nrgmagazines.com/index.htm) I think.
It was built by a sculptor who bought the place many years ago and moved his family in before they even had heat. The top of the building is a sculpture he titled The Fallen Angel. Last time I saw him and his wife at some community meeting someone inquired about the roof and he replied that it was still a work in progress. Can’t recall his name.
