  1. You need the following to move in somewhere

    first months rent
    security deposit
    and oftentimes last months rent

then factor in the lost wages and moving expenses.

3-5k dollars is alot – especially for a poor person. might be 2 months pay

  2. I kinda disagree on the whole staying there situation because moving is expensive. You can find a place in the neighborhood and move on fairly cheap, even with all the furniture. Find friends to help you lug heavy furniture on a cart (hey we did it as a family when moving 5 blocks). Also I moved dozens of friends where we would rent a Uhaul and drive everything. UHaul is 20 bucks a day plus $1 per mile and if you’re moving a mile or 2 away it’s really a minimal charge. The moving cart is another 6 bucks a day extra. I’ve moved whole apartment and family like that with 1 other person.

  3. If you’re in a rent stabilized place for 20 years, you’re probably paying so little that it’s a good deal, even with the rats and collapsing ceilings. And the landlord has no incentive to fix the place up, since his investment won’t generate more rental income. So both parties are acting rationally within the context of rent regulation.

  4. oh totally, in a situation like that moving would be mad expensive and for many people almost an impossibility financially. i was only throwing it out there that i guess it could be done on the cheap as well, but yeah obviously not for everyone. it wasnt cheap for me either, i had to scrape and scrounge to find a way to pay movers and luckily where i am now only needed 1/2 a month security deposit (otherwise it may have been impossible). those man with a van movers always seem like they are cheap but they wind up being pretty expensive.

  5. Rob, that may work for you as a single person with few possessions, but not for a family. Some people actually need their big furniture, you know, things like kitchen tables, beds, chairs and couches, etc. You are also making an assumption about the availability and amount of money a security deposit would be. Not much, if you’ve been in a rent stabilized apartment for 20 years. These are people with very few options. Hipster is absolutely correct.

  6. moving can be very expensive, but it can also be relatively cheap, you just have to know how to move on the cheap. 1.) leave all your big furniture behind and only take things that can fit in small boxes 2.) get friends to help move, preferably one with a car 3.) use your security deposit as your last months rent at your old place. if you take this route you can essentially move for free.

  7. Some of these tenants have gone 2-3 years without heat.

Yeah – it sucks. Some people are poor and don’t have an extra 4,000 dollars laying around to pack up and move. Fact of life. If someone wanted to rent your garden apartment but could only give you 1 month rent would you be down with that?
