tell ya what, I just went to flushing for chinese new year and had some sick dim sum, and passed by some very charming little places. if any one of them was on carroll street and ready to be torn down for a new condo building, brownstoner would be WEEPING BITTER TEARS!
Just playing devil’s advocate: if the “real neighborhood people” own houses, they’re not being displaced. and if they’ve been renting in the same townhouse for years, why would they suddenly want to buy in a high-rise? are the affordable units only offered to the people in the same hood? I’m not aware that they are. Has anyone checked out who actually ends up in these units? I mean, if poor people are totally interchangeable, I guess it works, but I didn’t think that was the point of the program. I think it’s just a rigged lotto, and a chip for christine quinn et. al. to pass around to the low ranking city pols who get on her team.
Interesting and Thanks. I’ll know not to be nosy when passing by again. However, they should replace that flag. Tattered stripes should not be flying.
Joe! sAY IT AIN’T SO, JOE!
Kidding aside- do you really think you can believe an ad on craigslist? Park view = patch of brown grass across the street right next to the little tree on the corner; great ethnic food = cart on the corner; city views= yes- if yo look through your neighbor’s window you can clearly see the picture of the NYC skyline taken in 1985. Nice houses with yards=still standing despite years of neglect with 2′ x 4′ lawn with polyester everbloomin’ flowers and a squirrel.
Ok, ok- I am sure there are lots of bargains but the real problem with developers is that they all only want to build luxury housing, and they go to midldle and lower income neighborhoods to purchase land becasue its cheaper. That in turn drives up prices in the neighborhoods, pushes people out and undercuts any stablizing structure. Neighborhoods like CHN and Bed-Stuy see this happen too much. If developers could be trusted to build affordable housing they would still make money in these neighborhoods and do more for them in the long run.
I just craigslisted queens and got 962 results for apartments under 1000/month. They’ve got lots of great stuff! parks, city views, unbelievable ethnic food, nice houses with yards…
screw brownstoner I’m going to queenstoner.
whoops I meant the EDGE in williamsburg.
