wine store
Another player has entered the Fort Greene wine market. After collecting signatures from area residents last fall, husband-wife team Emilia Valencia and Michael Yarmark got their liquor license and opened Thirst Wine Merchants at 187 Dekalb just before Christmas. Like a handful of other stores that have opened in Brownstone Brooklyn in recent years, Thirst is targetting affordable unfiltered, natural wines from small producers. Have any readers had a chance to stop in yet?

  1. Been there a few times and always walked away with something good. The people are lovely – zero attitude (can’t say that about every other place….).

It’s definitely a work in progress as they are still stocking the store and tweaking the basic setup. However, they are eager to engage browsers in conversation about their preferences and seem to be trying to get a feel for what people want. In other words, now’s your chance to help make it into the store you want it to be! – that’s my take, anyway.

  2. They are not that great. The selection is limited at this time. I received a bottle that was not a good experience after explaining my preference. I think they will need a little more time to get it right.

  3. We stopped in two weekends ago. The owners are nice. They were a little light in sauvignon blanc and reisling department, but after finding out my preferences he assured me they would be expanding those options soon. The lighting needs some tweaking. The
display racks were not immediately intuitive to me, but definitely make more of the stock visible.

  4. My wife and I stopped in and got two bottles of wine. I have to say the owners couldn’t have been nicer, nor more excited to talk about their products. What impressed me most was that they were earnest–not pretentious. Seem like good, honest folks. By the way, we absolutely loved the wine we had. Couldn’t have been happier and now am pleased to say that I have a new favorite wine shop.

  5. My husband and I stopped in a couple of weekends ago after a trip to the greenmarket, and we were impressed by the selection as well as the helpful, friendly owners. We’ll definitely be back.
