Food Co-op May Lease Space on Putnam

This would have pretty major implications for a longtime troubled corner of Clinton Hill: The Clinton Hill Blog is reporting that the Greene Hill Food Co-op, a nascent food co-operative that has been in the works for a couple of years now, is considering renting a row of small storefronts at 10-16 Putnam Avenue for its permanent headquarters; this stretch includes the mysterious and infamous Putnam Candy Store, profiled last year on The Times’ Local Blog. Combined with the new bar that’s in the works at 8 Putnam Avenue, this could set the stage for the kind of turnaround for the drug-addled corner that law enforcement has been unable to fully bring about (though big strides have certainly be made in the last five year). (Full disclosure: We live in the neighborhood.) There’s a meeting tomorrow night to discuss the idea at 138 South Oxford Street at 7 pm. We’re not members yet, but consider this a vote of support! Update: We just got an email from a reader saying that he thought it was only the two spaces on the left, not the candy store itself, that were being considered by the co-op. Anyone know for sure? Update #2: A member of the Co-op’s lease location committee emailed to confirm that the space under consideration is 18-30 Putnam Avenue. Regardless, this would be incredible for the area.
Where is the parking lot supposed to be? Is it the open space entering from Fulton St? (zoom up on the map)
That would be a great spot. Anywhere on Fulton Street (or this part of Putnam) in Clinton Hill would be good. C train is close by (2 short blocks to the Clinton Washington stop) and there are a couple of buses on Fulton Street.
Count me in. This location would really be central to a lot of people who’ve been salivating for something like this.
Storefront is actually a few east of Putnam Candy Store though (typo on Clinton Hill Blog’s initial post)…
Mmmm. Well, taking into consideration that Ft. Greene starts at Vanderbilt Ave., Google Maps walking directions shows a walking route from Vanderbilt and DeKalb to the Food Coop on Union St. to be 1.4 miles (22 blocks). Walking from Vanderbilt and DeKalb to the Putnam candy store is .7 miles (8 1/2 blocks) and if I wanted to be super snarky and count from Fulton St., it’s only 3 blocks.
Zinka, the argument won’t take. It’s a great location! Plus, as New Yorkers, most of us have grocery carts in ADDITION to carseat-laden supersized Brooklyn SUVs.
Nice to see the Brooklyn’s traditional food coop “holier than thou” system granting extra points for political correctness is already in place though ; )
this is an awesome location, can get all the foot traffic from the Co-op School parents walking back and forth twice a day as well as compete offer alternative to the Met. The CSA pick-up spot on Downing Street also supports that there is an abundant consumer base here. the laundry mat brings a ton of traffic that way.
and if someone in fort greene is willing to go to park slope, the would come here. waaayyyy easier than dealing with traffic across Atlantic/Flatbush and the parking in Park Slope. Oh, and the Fulton bus connects these neighborhoods quite nicely.
Sorry, boys and girls. This won’t stop your appraisals from caving.

This was supposed to be a food coop for Fort Greene too, not just Clinton Hill. The location on the very eastern edge of Clinton Hill is not appropriate to serve members from Fort Greene. For many parts of Fort Greene, this is actually farther away than the Park Slope Food Coop.
The location has mediocre transit access (really just the Fulton Street buses — it’s halfway between two C train stations), and comes with a parking lot — which will encourage car use within the neighborhood, something we should be working to discourage, especially from an organization that is ostensibly environmentally progressive, like this food coop.
This would be great. I have been waiting for them to find a good spot.
Wonderful news!!
