As of a couple hours ago, meat was still being stocked in the new Park Slope outpost of Fleisher’s, the much-loved organic butcher shop based in upstate New York, but it was supposed to be fully operational this afternoon. All of the shop’s meat comes from New York state farmers. The Times had a write-up on the opening that gives a sense of the prices: “Rotisserie organic chickens are $15 each, ground beef (an eclectic mix of 80 percent lean and 20 percent fat) is $5.99 a pound; to give you some idea of the high-end, boneless rib-eye steaks are $29.99 a pound.” The store is on 5th Avenue between Sackett and Union.

  1. There’s a reason the factory slaughterhouses in this country don’t have windows. How they “process” 99% of America’s meat would make you vomit if you saw. Actually – it makes a lot of people vomit when they eat it.

Which is why traditional butchers like Fleisher’s are making a comeback. Headed there tonight to see what’s left to buy!
