filenes-fulton-101310.jpgBrooklyn is getting its first Filene’s Basement. The clothing retailer is moving into 40,000 square feet of, yes, basement space at 490 Fulton Street on the Fulton Mall. (As the rendering shows, though, there will a street-level promotional presence.) The New York Post reported yesterday that the store will merge and expand brand lines of both Filene’s and Syms, which bought out Filene’s in 2009. It’s expected to open in 2012. Along with earlier news of H&M and Aeropostale setting up nearby, it’s looking like the Fulton Mall is moving up-market.

  1. The Mall is a middle income shopping area, just like before. Only the color of the folks has changed. While there are some working class folks, this is more middle than you think. They just aren’t W.

  2. I hope that the purported coming of Filene’s Basement, H&M and Aeropostale signal the return as Fulton Street as a place for middle income Brooklynians to shop. The proposed Filene’s Basement site was home for many years of a JW Mays & Co. store.
